AS2-Task Three:PreProduction Planning
Proposal
Prepared by
Satveer Kaur
|
The aim is to create an ident for the CBBC channel where the target audience varies from six to twelve year olds. The theme of the ident is space and I thought space would be suitable for the channel, because it is around that age children will be learning about much more than planets in science. So it ends up being suitable as there is energetic music, vibrant colours, educational as well as simplistic.

There is just a close up of Earth and Mars
Still the same close up of Earth and Mars, but there are ‘Zzz’ appearing
More ‘Zzz’ appear from the other side of the Earth
A rocket has took off from Mars
The rocket is moving around to the bottom of Mars
Wide shot of the rocket vertically facing down
Wide shot again of the rocket going horizontally to the right side of the Earth
Rocket is going back up and much closer to Earth
Rocket is going across the centre of Earth
Close up of half of the Earth moving away as the rocket carries on going straight
Close up of one third of the Earth and two letters forming from the smoke left behind from the rocket. The letters are C and B
Wide and close up shot of rocket having completely formed CBBC with the smoke it leaves behind

AS2-Task Two:Designing the Suite
As I have mentioned before the theme I have decided on doing is space, therefore the final three ideas I have are to do with bedtime, morning and halloween. All of the ideas are suitable as well as appeal to the target audience of six to twelve year olds due to the fact that it is educational and the idea is simple. A further point is that there will be a lot of colours making the ident visually good and the music to identify the channel is very engaging as the children will want to join along to a sound that should, and probably is recognisable.
The first storyboard is to be shown before bedtime to prepare the children for them to be relaxed. Furthermore, the first box simply shows two planets which is evidently Earth and in the distance is Mars, but what begins to happen in the next box is that the people who are on Earth have gone to sleep so the 'Zzz' appear which gradually occurs in the third box as well. Then there is a rocket that was sent out onto Mars which is arriving back to Earth while everyone is asleep, thus all through the ident the rocket is going around in circles so that the rocket can go across leaving a puff of smoke spelling CBBC. Plus the shots I will have throughout is a wide shot, while all the plasticine will be moving out of the shot slowly, apart from the letters which will be appearing. Although when every image is edited together it will be fairly quick. Last but not the least this is a simple idea whereas the others that I am about to mention are slightly complicated.

Although when every image is edited together it will be fairly quick. Last but not the least this is a simple idea whereas the others that I am about to mention are slightly complicated.
Additionally, the idea for this storyboard was due to halloween coming up in a few weeks therefore it would be more relevant. The first box is almost educational as every planet from the solar system is going to be shown, yet the shot will be a zoom into Saturn and also Uranus where there is a CBBC house party. So there is a green alien who is going to be travelling as a witch on her broomstick as there will be gravity. The aspect of gravity might be intriguing to the children hence they will want to find out more about it. Then there will be another shot where it zooms in once again as the alien/witch turns up, it will go closer on the letters of the channel. Even more so, what I am trying to say is that the shot types included is going to be close ups from a high angle tracking shot from the left hand side moving to the right hand side as it follows the alien/witch. Another point is that the movement which I have mentioned before has to be done slowly to show a smooth progress, when edited it will then be able to fit to the channel theme song in time as it will become one whole piece instead of be disorientated at a completely different time.
Lastly, this idea is for daytime because there is the sun that will be doing an experiment but due to the heat it is giving off and the chemicals that have been mixed together, they have caused these evaporating bubbles to form the CBBC in the air. In addition, the types of shots involved in recording this will be a high angle shot and it is because the plasticine is somewhat flat but not too much otherwise it would be difficult to move the plasticine around, therefore it also allows for definition to be added. The only movement is going to be of the suns arm and possibly the rays along with a lot of round balls which represent the bubbles and the mouth. These four will have precise movements so that there is always something to diverge the children's attention to new things, plus the issue with this being complicated is slightly to do with the fact that the ident is overall going to actually be in one position. Also the time of this ident would have been extremely short compared to the ident I have chosen to film, which is not long as well but it is long enough to show quite a few educational detail.

AS2-Task One:Ideas Generation
To be able to actually end up thinking and then designing the ident the process I went through was mind mapping. Down below is a mindmap that I created of potential theme ideas to explore how each theme can be used differently, and I chose to make the ident for the CBBC channel.
There were a lot of themes; the three themes I decided to go in depth on was space, numbers and nature. So for the space theme I was planning on doing it on planets that could be sleeping or awake, and they are involved in some form of science. So there could be experiments being performed by the Sun in broad daylight, to almost represent the Big Bang as the experiment will go wrong. Furthermore, the next ident that could have been created from the space theme is that an alien travels around planets to reach her destination to the CBBC halloween house, but is clumsy thus the sign is knocked off and focused on. Additionally, another theme that I thought of is nature and numbers where with the nature ident I could have conkers falling from a tree and are then rolling on the ground because of the wind, during autumn which spells out CBBC. Lastly, these themes are suitable for a children's TV channel because it is simple movement, friendly, the colours are vibrant, neutral towards gender as well as the fact that children are introduced to these themes at a young age. Therefore, they will be able to have an understanding and it will be educational but still in an entertaining way.

AS1-Task Three:Understanding the design of a suite of television idents
A suite of idents is when a television channel have many ideas rather than one, and they are almost a collection of several idents with a similar theme to connect them together. By having many suites of idents it means that the audience are provided with a range, to be intrigued with once they have had a glance. Also a single theme can help in maintaining the brand identity of any channel.
BBC One 'Capes'
This third examples theme of the suite is also a circle and the design is not at all complicated rather it be an interpretation of how the weather is terrible due to the rain yet it will become a better day hence there is a rainbow and sun. So the way in which the theme appeals to the viewers is based on the design as it somewhat neutral for everyone to have a preference based on the colours, plus the fact that the circle is forming from four different routes. The theme is used differently as I mentioned before because of the design, as nearly every sort of object has been used intelligently to produce a circular motion. I know that this type of ident could be considered as information led a bit, as it may inform families about the weather but not really as it can imply that BBC One is entertainment led from how it is recognised from that colourful design. In my opinion the ident is intended to be used for any particular days, apart from a certain time of year; as it does not get identified with freezing ice/snow particles during christmas, or dark vibes for halloween yet it is not necessary that darkness will be shown at halloween due to the fact that it would be associated with night time. Personally the design is so and so in being effective and I am basing this decision on how the design of the suite is consistent throughout, also this ident lasts for thirty five seconds. Additionally, the suite conveys that the channel that this is still carrying on being for everyone no matter who they are, because there are many people watching nationwide, therefore it allows them to feel inclusive.
An example of multiple suites is BBC One and their suite is the 'circle suite' as it involves a varied style in which the idents are similar but still different for example the hippos ident.
The theme of this suite is a hippo moving around in a circular motion. This sort of circular theme appeals to families who have pets of their own or just like every animal, and by using hippos it makes the channel seem more enjoyable. It is not by any means information led but instead it is entertainingly led as the first shot begins with a grown adult hippo with a young hippo swimming around together, which then goes from that shot to the last from a low angle tilted shot of all the hippos swimming unitedly. The suite cleverly conveys that the channel is suitable for everyone because it has adult and baby hippos which presents that it his family friendly, as well as it not being offensive to people due to hippos being a generic idea. As mentioned this form of ident of hippos is generic therefore, it can be shown anytime being day or night. It would be good for some people at nighttime because most people will be arriving back from work so by the time an individual is back with their family or friends they will all be getting ready to relax.
Another good BBC One circle ident "Moon"
This moon ident is a part of the circle theme suite. It was shown on television for two years from the seventh of October 2006 to July 2008. It appeals to the audience as it creates a soothing tone and this has been achieved by the music in the background. Even more so, this theme compared to the hippos ident is contrasting as the difference is that a range of locations are used to film these into unique sequences. The ident is but is not at the same time information led as a whole variety of programmes are aired but this specific ident is usually broadcasted before the news as it can prepare someone to keep themselves together if they hear a few terrible news, because people will be familiar with the ident. Thus this means they know what will being coming their way as the tone starts to change from calm to serious. Despite this small knock to the channel without a doubt the ident is supposed to be used a lot a night time hence the humongous moon in the central, and also this would not be shown during a particular time of year plus it cannot be shown anymore due to the ident having been withdrawn for a reason I am not sure about. On the channel the suite conveys that the viewers are adults who may have a hobby of fishing or rowing etc, which is looks effortless since the people have reached the moon. The ident lasts for thirty three seconds and is effective as it lures an adult to watch the whole ident due to how it is short, and also as I mentioned before of how Howard Greenhalgh wanted to directed this ident in Kamenjak peninsula in northern Croatia. Along with that the design of the moon is forming from separate sections.
BBC One 'Capes'
Another example is 'Christmas'
This ident shows a father and child gruffalo having fun as they are sliding down on snow and drop centrally into a pile of snow making a round circle. It is an ident that can be viewed by families as well it has a memorable easing tone. This suite of ident is actually both entertainment led and information led due to the fact that it is mentioning what programmes will be on next, This ident is intended to especially be shown both morning and night time during christmas time each year. Also the suite conveys that christmas is magical as it is visible that the design of the ident includes sparkles, so this suite of ident is very effective as there is joyful music in the background and it lasts for twenty seconds.
The next example is 'rhythm and movement'
The theme of this rhythm and movement ident is that two male dancers are almost doing contemporary dancing as their legs are being stretched in a straight line creating a circle in opposite directions from one another. This ident is targeted more towards the younger views, because the tone is calm and younger people are interested in dance themselves. Even this ident is not information led yet it is entertaining. As the audience wait for the next programme to start I think that it would be aired possibly during midday. The design of the suite personally is not effective as it nothing else is happening other than the dancers being in one place, whereas they could have had maybe other people dancing other countries/cities in split screen as it would be more diverse and relatable in some sense. The ident lasts for eleven seconds which is less than hippos ident as it could become tedious. Last but not the least this was the next suite being made to air after the circle themed suites.
The next example is 'rhythm and movement'
The last example is channel 4's
The theme of this ident is a structural number four being put together, and this is targeted to both younger and older viewers. It appeals to this target group because it creates an educational tone, and as channel 4 are innovative they use many buildings or great touristy attractions to build a huge number four so this is effective. Plus this is definitely intended to be shown in the morning as it shows in the image.
In conclusion, it is useful to create a good design of suites as everyone prefers different things so it makes it more closer and personal to the public as they will be loyal to a certain brand identity.

AS1-Task Two:Understanding the limitations of the television ident
First and foremost when creating a television ident there can be both positive and negative limitations. In order for the television idents to be successful the five limitations need to be considered to affect the design of the ident. or the following five, and those are typography, colour, aspect-ratio, adhering to a desired tone also duration.
Typography
Typography is to do with the use of certain font for image or clarification, so the fixed limitation to a channel such as BBC One is that the presentation has to be kept the same, but this makes the ident seem boring. Although the channel presentation can be varied to a minimum there can be a few modifications for example BBC Two is all in capitals and bolder. It is good sometimes to keep the presentation consistent throughout, because the less change there is the more assurance there is for the audience to recognise a channel that they like ore dislike.
Colour
In addition, colour is used a lot in idents and there are specific colours for a particular channel.
Also vibrant colours associated with different channels, for example BBC One's accent colour is red, E4 as purple and BBC sport are yellow. The limitation of colour is almost the same as typography, however the reason as to why the colour is not changed for the idents is due to the fact that there would be consistency and it allows the audience to make an acknowledgement of the channel easily. Another point is that the channels can be more original through the idents imagery, making them different from other channels as there will be all sorts of individuals who will be attracted to a certain channel for a certain purpose behind it all.
Aspect-ratio
Furthermore, aspect-ratio is the dimensions required to fit the screen. Thus their are guidelines to follow one of the most important being that the ident has to be of high definition which can be delivered in 16.9 widescreen. It means that the active image must fill a 16.9 screens vertically also horizontally without geometric distortion. Plus the positive limitation of an aspect ratio is that most of the population have a TV wide enough for the whole ident. Yet this is also a negative limitation as some people will not have a perfect sized TV, hence the picture will always be distort and jarring.
Adhering to a desired tone
As said in the title this is making sure the ident as well as the tone for the channel is appropriate for the viewer. Therefore, the positive limitation is that a channel such as BBC Four will be created for a mature audience. Yet if a child was to see an ident which is made for elder people rather than children their age then they will find it dull. A further point is that if the tone is not right then it will be a surprise, and becomes a turn off for the audience. For example the image down below for CBeebies would be appropriate for the audience which are children because it is simple and includes a lot of vibrant colours, along with the tone being exciting as it has a memorable jingle. Also the yellow blobs intend that the channel is not too serious. Whereas the BBC Four ident with the books implies that the channel is for intellectual people as it will be more informative than entertainment led.
Duration
Lastly, duration is how long an ident can be shown for in between programmes to keep the schedule on the right track. When idents have a duration they could be either longer or shorter, and the limitation of shorter idents is that they will possibly not provide enough information for the audience to know what could be shown on the channel. But the positive of a short ident is that the viewer will not have to wait so long to watch a programme if they have acknowledged everything that might be shown on the channel. However, longer idents are likely to have the same problem as a shorter ident, because it will just get very repetitive after it has been viewed once. On the other hand, it allows people to have a bit of time to get themselves ready for the programme. Plus if there is any problems with the scheduling then a longer ident can be used as an emergency. Thus the longer ident down below shows that dogs have done much more and towards they end there is a loop of the dogs going round in circles, so that is the difference between both a short and long ident.

AS1-Task One:Understanding the purpose of television idents and opportunties they present
Before the process of planning and presenting a new suite of idents there should be an understanding of the purpose of television idents, and the opportunities the present. Therefore, the following that needs to be ensured is covered are:
Firstly, in 1953 on the BBC the first ever ident that had appeared was nicknamed "Bat's Wings," Therefore, seven years later there was a "BBC tv" logo which was introduced in the form of the logo being within a circle of the top of a map Britain, that had been split into the BBC's broadcast regions. Later the most famous ident from 1960 known as "the globe" appeared in 1963 but with a few changes, such as the globe rotating and as the BBC tv logo would appear there would be a voice announcing "This is BBC Television." Although there have been great deals of changes of idents currently, before there were small changes being made due to the role of new technology allowing for the development. In addition, an ident is useful in achieving the goal of identifying the channel as it is the most straight forward function. Plus when commercial TV began in 1960 it meant that there were going to be many viewers watching, and it made it easy for the viewers identify different channels by the idents. So once again in the early 90's there was an emergence of satellite televisions indicating that television idents became even more important.
Organising the schedule
Furthermore, idents are important because they help in keeping the channel's schedule organised. When there is a show that is supposed to be exactly on at the correct time yet there are a few seconds, then it gives an opportunity to sometimes provide the audience with key information about programming on that channel. Thus by organising a scheduled ident it means that it very useful due to the fact that the information may be able to entice the viewer to continue watching the particular channel rather than switching over to view something else of their interests.
Segmentation of the scheduling
Segmentation of the scheduling is almost similar to organising the schedule but segmentation is the after math once it is discussed where and how long the ident should be. Even more so, segmentation adds a little extra time to fill for promotions of a variety of programming as well as provide a break for studio workers a break. The reason some channels have to have idents is because the are two types of channels and they are non-commercial and commercial. Hence BBC being a non-commercial channel do not have the time in between programmes to advertise unlike commercial channels that include ITV along with Channel 4 and many others.
Creating corporate identity
As of now there are no longer anymore restrictions that only one country should have television channels. Due to the expansion of television channels in other locations it assists in creating a brand. Plus with consistency across a range of channels for example the BBC aids in establishing a corporate identity that can be sold across the world. Moreover, as there is a growth of online platforms like the BBC iPlayer it is absolutely necessary for corporations to retain the image that could be so easily diluted in the online world.
Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty
Additionally, building a brand for a particular channel is vital. This is because it encourages the audience to stay loyal to the channels. Idents tend to endorse the brand by the audience taking their time to familiarise themselves with the logo as well as the style. Nevertheless, it ends up being a visual reminder because it imprints into the viewers mind, therefore this possibly makes them a lot likely to continue watching the channel again. An example of this includes CBBC who had used the 'modern' CBBC ident for seven years and then later changed it to 'just imagine' ident.
Branding of particular content
Branding a particular content is so that a programme can be recognisable only to the channel, and at the same time it provides a consistent theme across a range of platforms. For example, the BBC The Voice ident is showing that there is a daily soap on next however as mentioned the voice will just be shown on BBC One. However, there is one channel that recently re-branded everything and the channel is More4. The people who helped in changing the ident was ManvsMachine, and what they ended up designing the logo vibrantly. It is because it meant that channel show a wide range of programmes ranging from nature to fashion etc.
Creating the right tone and appealing to the target audience
Despite the fact that idents can be identified simply it still has to appeal to certain age groups, so a channel such as Cbeebies and CBBC would definitely have to set the correct tone to appropriately grasp children's attention. Another example is for adults because when BBC Four arrived they built up their reputation by having factual programming, which the initial ident had reflected through.
Marketing opportunity + Packaging and re-packaging a series of programmes or event
Also marketing opportunity is when there is a chance to cleverly promote an ident for a new drama which will start at a certain season time. Such as the ITV christmas ident. Lastly, idents are often used to promote large events or a new series, one example being the Strictly Come Dancing on BBC.
